Environmental effects on metabolism

Environmental exposures and lifestyle choices are known to affect human metabolism. Our group focuses on identifying those factors as well as on highlighting the molecular and biological mechanisms underlying this relationship. An example of such an elaboration, currently under research, is the browning of white adipose tissue and activation of brown fat upon cold exposure or exercise.

Adipose tissue biology and genetics

Our team focuses in research regarding adipose tissue biology and genetics of healthy and diseased (Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiometabolic Syndrome a.o.) population. Our investigation approaches include field and laboratory studies, working both in vivo and in vitro, in an effort to elucidate possible genetic markers and phenotypic indices that could play a role in adipose tissue “behavior”. Thus, our research utilizes induction or absence of certain stimuli. Currently, we perform gene polymorphism association and in vitro studies on adipocytes’ metabolism.
